Rachel had just recently gotten back from Washington State University. She wasn’t supposed to have graduated this year, but from all of her hard work she was told she was going to be. It was a nice feeling to graduate early, but that also meant she had to go back home for a bit. Rachel didn’t plan on staying in La Push for too long. She was already looking at apartments in Seattle, she had money saved up from her jobs while on campus and it would at least be enough for a down payment and the first month’s rent. Rachel knew she’d have to find a better job once she got out there though. It was closer, driving wise to La Push from Seattle and she knew that it would be even more expected for her to come here on holiday’s at the very least. She loved her family, but she hated being here. La Push had too many bad memories of her mother’s accident and death, as well as her father becoming ill.
Rachel wasn’t stupid, she knew her brother and father, especially her father didn’t want her to leave. She tried to avoid the subject as best she could, because despite the fact that she hardly ever visited them she does feel guilty for deserting them. It’s hard for her to fully explain why she doesn’t visit them but she’s sure it’s rather obvious. Right now her father was in his room, working on something…she had forgotten what he had said as she had been busy watching some mindless TV.
It felt weird and natural to be back in the small Black house, she could remember where everything was. Though some things had been moved here and there. She no longer had her room because her brother now lived in it, but she didn’t mind too much just sleeping on an air-mattress in the living room at night. It’s not like she’d be here for much longer. Not that she’d exactly bring that subject up with them, especially her father. Leaning back on the couch after grabbing a bag of half empty chips she let out a sigh as she opened the bag and took a handful of crumpled chips and shoved them in her mouth. Just as she was about to take another handful she heard the doorbell ring and announced that she’d get it before putting the bag down on the couch and brushing her hands off on her jeans.

( i could really use a wish right now ) • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • Leah had been enjoying an afternoon to herself, free of Seth and his loud video games and the delightful aroma of her mother cooking in the kitchen settling inside her nostrils. It was nice to be able to relax and not have to worry about being alert for Sam summoning the pack to take care of a problematic vampire or go on patrol, but at the same time it was a bit boring too. The twenty year old beauty had been rather disappointed with the lack of action since the fight with the newborns, but at the same time she was relieved. It was kind of confusing when she tried to explain it, so she didn’t bother. It made sense in her head, and that’s all that mattered in her opinion. After helping her mother in the kitchen for a bit, Leah had settled down on the couch, basking in the room she had because she didn’t have to try and get around Seth, and had started to read a book she had bought a few weeks back and hadn’t had the chance to read. The story had her attention, so she wasn’t really paying attention to much else as her eyes scanned the pages in front of her. It wasn’t until her mother was standing right in front of her and had taken the book from Leah’s hand that the shapeshifter realized she was being spoken too.
Apparently, her mother had promised Billy dinner and still had things cooking for it, so Leah was being recruited to help and start bringing things over there. At this, Leah raised an eyebrow and wondered why they were eating in the Blacks’ tiny house instead of the Clearwaters’, but she decided it was better not to ask questions. So, she dug around the couch for her bookmark, placed it in the book to mark her page and set it down on the coffee table. Once she did that, she lifted herself up and took the covered dish from her mother and set it on the table by the door while she pulled on her shoes and grabbed the car keys. She wasn’t exactly keen on going since she feared some of the pack guys might be hanging out with Jacob there, but her mother was a hard woman to say no too and it wasn’t like she really had a valid excuse to refuse to help. Plus, it wasn’t like she had to stay after she’d dropped off the dish since her mother would be showing up eventually with the rest of it. Or at least, that was what Sue had claimed was going to happen. So, Leah walked out to the car she had recently acquired, glad that her mother still had one of her own to use later, and pulled out of the driveway.
As she drove, Leah kept hoping that she wouldn’t run into any of the pack because doing so would certainly kill her happy afternoon. It was nice to have some time to herself without worrying about her pack hounding her, and she wasn’t willing to end that time just yet. She knew she had patrol later on that night, but was planning to enjoy the time she had until then. She also wondered if she was expected to eat with Billy and her mother since there was so much food, but she already decided that she wouldn’t if they asked. She’d already decided that she would eat at Emily’s later on before patrol, -despite Sam being there too- and wasn’t going to change those plans for anyone. The street was empty so Leah got to the Blacks’ house in less time than usual, the parked the car, grabbed the dish from beside her and turned off the car. Once she made it to the front door she knocked lightly, expecting to see Billy.

Rachel hadn’t been home very long, but even still she just wanted to get out of here. She was sure her father and Jacob knew that, but she didn’t want to say anything. Rachel knew her father wanted to beg her to stay but staying here was more or less hell. The nightmares of her mother’s death had started up again, which rarely happened since she had left La Push the first time. Her mom always comforted her when she had a nightmare in a way that no one else could, even her dad. Rachel felt like her thoughts constantly revolved her mother and her death ever since getting back here.
Except for right now when she had just gotten settled down and her mind off her mother, for once. However that was interrupted by someone being at the door. Her thoughts went to her younger brother, Jacob for a moment. It felt like he was never home anymore and he seemed a bit distant from her, she’d probably have to talk to him soon because it felt like something was up for him. Maybe she was just being a bit paranoid for feeling guilty because she had left him but she didn’t think he hated her. Opening the doors it took her a second to realize who it was. “Leah?” She asked with wide eyes, since when did she get so tall? Rachel used to be taller than her, and they were the same age.
Leah had been one of her closer friends when she had lived on the reservation, though she had kept a distance between everyone as she feared someone she cared about getting hurt again. Maybe it was ridiculous but that’s how she felt. Still, she was happy to see an old friend. They had emailed each other once in a while, but it probably wasn’t enough. Leaning against the door she looked up at her old friend in surprise. “When did you get so tall?” She asked before realizing she had asked the wrong thing and felt like she had been rude. “I mean, what are you doing here?” Rachel asked quickly, cheeks slightly flushed for having blurted out that question. Her eyes then fell down at the dish in Leah’s hands and was curious.

( i could really use a wish right now ) • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • As Leah waited outside the Blacks’ house, she shifted her weight to the other foot and the covered dish to her other hand. She had no idea what was in there, but it smelled good so Billy was lucky to be getting it. She figured that she would be invited to stay for dinner, but she had already told Emily that she would go there for dinner so the two of them could spend some time together. She was kind of regretting that promise since Sam and the rest of the pack would probably be there too, but it was too late to back out now. Sometimes, she wished that other females on the reservation besides her had been born with the gene because being the only girl in the pack was kind of depressing sometimes. Being outnumbered by males wasn’t necessarily a bad thing in Leah’s mind, but the fact that they thought they should handle everything and not let her in much action bothered her. None of them trusted her to do anything on her own and that was annoying because she didn’t need to be saved all the time.
As the doors opened, Leah’s eyes fell on the young woman on the other side and her eyes widened in surprise. The other girl’s eyes did the same, and she seemed to be struggling with figuring out who Leah was. “Hey Rach,” she said in response, giving her old friend a smile. Rachel Black was her age and had been fortunate enough to get out of La Push and go to school. Leah’s brow furrowed in confusion for this reason, but then she realized that it was summer and that Rachel wouldn’t be at school right now. She did, however, wonder why the girl had come back since last Leah had talked to her, Rachel had wanted nothing more than to put La Push behind her and never come back. She knew that it was because of Sarah Black’s death and the painful memories La Push held for the Black family – Rachel and Rebecca in particular – since Leah could relate. In fact, if she wasn’t bound to the reservation she would have gone away for school too, and probably not come back. Leah shrugged at Rachel’s question, knowing that she couldn’t blame her wolf gene on her sudden growth spurt. Most girls stopped growing by eighteen, but Leah hoped that since Rachel had been gone for a few years, she would believe in a random growth spurt. “A few months after you left,”she teased, hoping that Rachel wouldn’t question that. It made enough sense, however, that Leah figured she’d be safe. At Rachel’s next question, she held out the covered dish in her hands. “My mom sent this over. I’m pretty sure she’s bringing more but this was ready and she didn’t want to keep you guys waiting,” she explained. “How long have you been back?” she asked, genuinely curious since she hadn’t heard anything about it until now. Despite the fact that Rachel had distant herself from the others that lived on La Push after her mother’s passing, Leah had been one of her more closest friends when she lived here. So she wasn’t upset to be seeing an old friend at the moment, and it showed by the smile on her face. It was weird though, seeing her after quite a few years apart and it seemed a lot had changed for not only Rachel but Leah too. The last time she had spoken to her was right after her father’s passing, and Rachel felt bad for not only Leah but her entire family. She knew first hand how that felt and Rachel wished she could’ve been there to support them. Sympathy crossed her features as she remembered the night that Leah had called her, crying about her father passing away, it hadn’t been a pleasant night for either of them especially when Rachel was reminded in detail of how she had felt after finding out her mother had died.
Realizing Leah was speaking to her, Rachel quickly snapped out of it. A smile coming back to her lips when Leah had greeted her. “Well you could’ve given saved me some of the height juice.” Rachel teased when Leah told her that she had gotten the growth spurt a few months after she left. It was like Rachel hadn’t missed a beat in their friendship, despite it being years since Rachel and Leah had last seen each other and hung out. Of course Rachel wouldn’t think it was that strange that Leah had grown to be rather tall rather suddenly, it wasn’t like that sort of thing was impossible. Though the rest of Leah’s family didn’t seem to be that tall, still she shrugged it off without a second thought.
When Leah explained why she was here and what she had with her, Rachel eyed the covered dish before looking back up at her. It was like her mind had blanked for a moment on how to be polite, “Oh, sorry.” She said with a laugh and moved out of the way. “You can come in.” Rachel told her as she held the door open wide and stood at its side. “That was really nice of your mom, what did she make?” Rachel asked, her mom always made good food from what she could remember. Rachel didn’t bother to ask Leah, but she wondered if her mom cooked a lot for her father and Jacob. She knew her dad’s cooking skills were limited and Jake could probably whip up a simple sandwich on a good day. “Oh, about a day.” Rachel told her before cringing, feeling bad that she didn’t come over to Leah’s house or call her, “Sorry I didn’t call you, I was…” She didn’t have a good enough excuse, it’s not like she had been up to anything, “Being a bad friend apparently.” Rachel said after sighing deeply, hoping Leah wasn’t mad at her.
