» OVERALL PERSONALITY:
Sarcasm is one of the basics of Bella’s personality. It comes naturally to her and she was disappointed when it seemed initially lost on several of the people in Forks. Luckily, she met Edward and Jacob, who completely get sarcasm. Along with being sarcastic, stubbornness is a dominant Bella trait. She will argue to no end about how she knows what’s best for her and Charlie, and sometimes the Cullens and the La Push pack. It’s not like she claims to be a know-it-all, she just thinks that when it comes to her life, she should be in control of it as much as possible. She hates having her life run for her, especially when it comes in the form of Edward or Jacob trying to keep her away from the other person. She doesn’t see them as vampire and werewolf, but as people, which gets her into some sticky situations with Edward at times.
Bella is an intelligent woman, though her book smarts is limited to that, books. She’s an English nerd and loves to read. Her favorite book is Wuthering Heights and she reads it so much that the binding is worn and doesn’t need a bookmark when it’s put down. She doesn’t prioritize well, or maybe she was a bit preoccupied with her constant impending doom, so she wouldn’t be able to get into a really good college on her own. When it comes to street smarts, she’s kind of out of it. Bella doesn’t see herself as attractive or good enough for either Edward or Jacob. She’d like to think of herself as realistic, knowing that she’s not good enough as a human and that she’s clumsy and attracts danger like a giant magnet.

» HISTORY:
Isabella Swan was born in Forks, Washington to Charlie Swan and Renée Swan (later Dwyer). She was the product of two people who fell in love and got married after high school. Her mother at one point thought of this as a mistake and left Charlie Swan, leaving for Phoenix, Arizona, where she took her daughter. Isabella, more commonly known as Bella, visited her father in Forks every summer until she finally put her foot down and instead of going to the dreary state, vacationed with her father in California for two weeks out of the summer. Other than that, her childhood was not very interesting. She played the role of mother to her own mom and was possibly the most clumsy child on the face of the planet, carrying this into her teenage life. She took ballet lessons, but was always in the back because she wasn't any good.
Bella’s sarcastic humor developed quickly in her life. Mostly, it just helped her around Charlie, her father. She found it was easier to say what she wanted to say but make it funny at the same time if she was sarcastic. And then there were just the answers to questions that she didn’t really want to answer, so making a joke out of them was the perfect way to get around everything. It started when her mother announced that Bella would be going to Forks for part of the summer. “Oh yeah, that’s exactly where I want to be…” She had replied, and while it wasn’t true, she got the point across without making her father unhappy, because her mother hadn’t told him the tone in which she had said it, only the words.
The habit of reading also started with a vacation in Forks, Washington. She needed to find ways to pass the time on the plane and on the awkward drive in the police cruiser, so she turned to books. It wasn’t long before children’s books were boring for her and she migrated to chapter books and plays. This took her away from a lot of the media. She didn’t like watching television shows or even seeing a whole lot of movies. By the time she was a teenager and invited out with her friends to go to a theater, she wasn’t all that interested in watching whatever was big with her friends, because it was usually filmed horribly and ended up being completely predictable. She did, however, end up going most of the time because it was something to do and a way to get out of the house.
On one trip to Forks, Bella met Charlie’s friend Billy Black and his son Jacob. Charlie and Billy sort of forced them together so they could go fishing a lot. The children spent much of their time near the tidal pools, which soon became Bella’s favorite thing in Washington. The tidal pools were fascinating for her; each had it’s own little ecosystem that would be washed away once the tide came in again. Of course spending time there meant a hike with Charlie, Billy, and Jacob, which also meant getting hurt. But Bella was used to being clumsy, so when she fell she usually just got back up, though Charlie would make a big deal out of every little cut at first, until he got used to the idea of Bella as a clutz.
Though Bella was the more mature person in the relationship she had with her mother, she wasn’t always the parent. Bella can remember getting herself into trouble, or walking too close to the street and her mother would completely flip out. Bella soon learned to cook and became very good at it; her mother’s experiments weren’t always successful. One particular case was spaghetti with chocolate instead of meatballs. What possessed her mother to do such a thing was beyond Bella, who at the time was almost fourteen and already knew how to cook. After this incident, Bella took over the kitchen, which didn’t seem to upset Renée in the slightest.
Bella was a good sport about just about everything, though she was highly uncoordinated and this often wound up getting her hurt. She took part in all of Renée’s flighty obsessions, knowing they would last a couple of months at the longest. Usually, she would end up in the hospital getting stitches, though this wasn’t always due to some random idea that her mother had.
One time, Bella was in school, science class actually. The students were broken off into groups, something Bella absolutely hated. It wasn’t so much that she disliked working in groups, but working in groups slowed her down, though she never said anything about it. Anyway, the class was working on dissecting frogs. Bella could hear most of the girls in the class making disgusted noises and most of the boys in class getting excited about cutting open a dead frog. Bella was indifferent toward the situation; she wasn’t going to make a fuss over it, but she wasn’t exactly excited either. Dissecting meant sharp objects and sharp objects meant possible pain, though Bella had gotten used to pain over the years. Her partner was a boy of about fifteen, the same age Bella was at the time, and dropped the knife used to cut open the dead frog. Bella bent over to pick it up, but somehow tripped over the leg of her chair and hit her head on the table on her way to the floor, where she landed on the same knife and cut open her hand. There was laughter from the other students, apologies from her lab partner, and a teacher rushing to her side to help her up and on her way to the nurse’s station, where it was decided that she would be taken to the hospital. She received a few stitches and a worried phone call from Renée, who had gone to a sky diving class but left so she could be with her daughter, though Bella assured her everything was completely fine.
Then her mother married Phil, who wanted to be a baseball player. Her mother stayed home, but Bella knew it made the woman unhappy. So she did what most teenagers would have never done - moved in with her father in the place she completely loathed: Forks, Washington. Charlie was more than excited. When Bella got to Forks she was the talk of the town. Everyone knew who she was: Bella Swan, daughter of Chief of Police Charlie Swan. She was a novelty of sorts, coming from a sunny area but perfectly pale. Awkward in the sense of her look. Plain, she thought, though watched and wanted by almost every boy in school.
As if this weren't enough, she found it difficult to keep away from a certain boy. Edward Cullen seemed to hate her at first and Bella had absolutely no idea why. He had even left for a week. It was all very confusing until Bella was introduced to the supernatural world, finding out about the Cullens secret through a friend, Jacob Black, who had no idea that he was telling Bella something that could complicate her life forever. The information should have terrified her, but Bella found herself drawn to the Cullens. Instead of running in fear, she put herself in death's path, clinging to Edward and eventually becoming so attached to him that life without him seemed impossible.
And, in fact, that was about right. After an attack on Bella by Jasper Hale, Edward's adoptive brother and pretend twin to Rosalie Hale, Edward decided to leave Bella for her safety. It left Bella empty and aching. A hole in her chest where her heart was supposed to be was what was left when Jacob Black came to her rescue. The family friend was what Bella needed to pull her out of her personal dark times, though she wasn't all the way out of the hole. In Jacob, Bella found a friend. More than that, she eventually found herself longing to be around him, wishing that she could see in him something more. And then he started hanging out with the wrong crowd, a crowd that Bella blamed for removing the friend who had helped her so much. Until Jacob visited her through her window and Bella found herself remembering a story he had told her about werewolves. The link didn't connect in her head until after he had left that night and soon she had her friend back.
Edward came back after a few months, tearing the friendship up because werewolves and vampires were not allowed to be friends despite the treaty that allowed them both to coexist so close together. This split Bella into two parts: the part that could not exist without Edward Cullen; and the part that needed Jacob Black as a friend. So despite the fact that it hurt both of them, Bella snuck off to be on the Rez with her friend Jacob. Eventually, this was allowed.
Then there was Victoria. Her mate had died as a result of Edward's family when he tried to kill Bella. James had bit her on the palm the first year Bella had moved to Forks and Edward sucked the venom out. Victoria was back for her revenge. The vampire incident brought together the wolves and the Cullens in a successful attempt to save Bella Swan, though through this Bella learned that she really did love Jacob Black as well as Edward Cullen. It split her heart up again, but she knew she couldn't live without Edward.

» RP SAMPLE:Bella had started to develop an argument in her mind; it was a pretty good argument, about how if you put her in a line with Rose and Alice and then a bunch of human girls, Bella would probably be the third in line, next to Alice with Rosalie at the front as far as how beautiful they were. Bella would never deny that she was pretty because she could obviously see that. It had been apparent that first day, or, the third day because she had pretended to be unconscious the first two (something she still hadn’t told Edward about but had managed to get Carlisle alone, who had been able to control his thoughts about that around Edward for now), when she first looked into the mirror. But she was plain as far as vampires went, she just fit in a bit more with the Cullens now.
Anyway, the argument had been formed in less of a second and had been completely wiped out in even a shorter amount of time. All it took was Edward’s chuckle and Bella completely forgot what she needed to say. She wondered if that was common for vampires, or if it was just her. Then again, Edward was her mate, her husband, and he had always had that effect on her. Even with all of this room in her mind, he could still make her speechless. Of course, she had done that a few times too, but as far as she understood, it was only because he couldn’t hear her thoughts so she didn’t always do what was expected.
She opened her mouth to say something but then his finger was over her lips and it shut immediately. Every touch from him somehow sent a human-like feeling of shivers down her spine. This was the only part of being human she hadn’t wanted to give up - being so close to him and wanting him more than anything else. She was glad she had completely skipped the newborn phase, even though she knew this was supposed to pick up about now anyway.
His arms felt like a secure cage wrapped around her like they were; she was glad he didn’t have to be careful with her anymore. Bella hated knowing that Edward had been holding back on her during her human years. Of course he had explained that it had been necessary so that she wouldn’t have been killed. It was a relief now to know that they were about as strong as each other. They balanced each other perfectly: Edward was the fastest Cullen, could read minds, Bella was only slightly stronger than Edward, no where near as strong as Emmett anymore, but could shield the family… mentally at least. And she liked that Edward couldn’t always read her mind; a lot of the things she thought about, especially with all of this new space, were really embarrassing.
His lips were on hers again and she forgot what she was going to say next. He’d been apologizing before… about coming out here alone or making her think she should leave? The second one, that was what was going on. It took her a moment to get her thoughts back. “That’s really not fair you know,” she teased, her musical voice barely a whisper. “Making me forget like that…” She smiled slightly and turned her body more so she could see him better. Everything about him was perfect: his eyes, his mouth, his marble skin. And then the way he held her, the way he spoke to her. Almost like nothing could come between them - probably because nothing really could come between them. Bella knew how this relationship would work without the other - it was simple… it wouldn’t. Either one of them would stop existing for the other, but being without each other was impossible. So if Bella gave her life to save Edward, they would both end up dead… well, more dead than they were now. Which made Bella feel bad for Renesmee. Because she loved her daughter, and wanted to protect her if at all possible. She would give her life to save Renesmee, but if Renesmee died, Bella didn’t know if she would ask for the same fate. With Edward, it was easy. She had already lived for a time without him and knew that it was impossible. She had no experience with losing a daughter. She would like to think that she wouldn’t live if Renesmee didn’t exist, but she was completely unsure, and thankful that Edward couldn’t read that in her mind.
“Edward, what if it can’t be fixed?” Her voice was completely calm, though concern was obviously the number one emotion for her right now. “Caius can’t be allowed to stay in charge of the Volturi. He won’t ever let us be in peace again. But we can’t just fight him and the guard either…” Her voice trailed off. Marcus had been the one that the Volturi were looking for now, and as far as Bella knew, he had just begun looking to stay with other vampires. He wouldn’t come here would he? They’d been fortunate enough that so far they weren’t put in that position, but if he did come here, what would Carlisle do? Would they take his side, or would they push him away? Bella didn’t think Carlisle would be able to just ignore that Marcus wanted help. Did that mean the Cullens would need to fight? It hadn’t come to that last time, but they had all been preparing for it.
Bella closed her eyes and let her head fall back onto Edward’s chest as she thought. She thought about Jacob and Renesmee. “I don’t like it anymore than you do,” she said, making her voice as even as possible. It was true. Over the last two hundred years, Bella had grown a tolerance, and was even thankful at some times that they had Jacob to fall back on as someone who would take care of their daughter if they were missing, but Bella didn’t like the claim Jacob had on Renesmee. And most days, she just wanted him to leave them alone sometimes. He still stole all of her words and delivered them entirely wrong. But Jacob was Bella’s friend, and she had to admit, she liked having him there - where their lives were both working out for them. Her heart wasn’t split into two anymore. Jacob was where he was supposed to be.
Her head shook gently as he tried to make her see that it hadn’t been her fault before and she opened her eyes to look at him. “If it hadn’t been for my stupid human blood we wouldn’t have been in that mess and Jane wouldn’t have been able to hurt you.” The words came out fast because she was afraid she might forget them or that he would stop her at some point, but she was able to get them all out. She took a deep breath and talked more slowly. “You better not come out here again without me. Jane could have been here. Edward, I don’t think I could live with myself if something happened to you…” But her voice was more calm now, less rushed and definitely glad that nothing had actually happened and she sighed needlessly. “I love you, too,” she whispered.
She stretched up to put her lips to his, kissing him softly before looking up at the sun, still shining down on them. She almost wished she could feel the warmth of it on her cold skin, but the only thing warm she felt was Edward’s skin, which would have felt ice cold to her two hundred years ago. “When all of this is taken care of,” she said, still looking at the sky, “we’re going on vacation. I want a couple of years without pretending to be a student.” The corner of her lips pulled up into a smile, wondering if that was even at all possible for them to do. She hadn’t really been away from her new family much in the last couple of hundred years.
